Guide for Newborn Photoshoot
HOW TO PREPARE
When to book a Newborn Session
Newborn shoots are typically scheduled between the first two weeks of baby's birth. The reason for this is that they tend to sleep more deeply, making it easier to capture those adorable poses. This does not mean that babies up to 6-8 weeks can't be done though, the posing may just differ.
Outfit Selection for Newborns
I have a basic closet for newborns. You are welcome to use anything I have. If you would like to bring something, typically, simple, solid or subtle patterns, and neutral/earthy coloured clothing look best. Outfits that can be easily changed are ideal. If family members are included in the shoot try to coordinate colour scheme/style (Should not be too matchy-matchy).
Outfit Selection for Parents
Please bring something that you feel comfortable and confident in. Simple, solid (or subtle patterned), and neutral/earthy coloured clothing look best. I suggest that parents or family members should avoid wearing clothing with logos. If you would like some skin-to-skin images consider bringing a strapless bra (nude coloured) or a tank top (neutral/earthy coloured).
Props, Colours and Accessories Selection
Decide on props (i.e. soft toys, little beds, buckets, table poses, etc.), colour schemes, themes and/or accessories (hats, wraps, headbands, etc.) that you may want to include in your newborn shoot that reflect your style. I have a selection of newborn props, headbands, wraps, backdrops, and blankets. Please let me know in advance if you want to add any props or any other item, toy, or heirloom into your photoshoot.
Feeding and Comfort
Feeding your baby right before the session is a good idea - this makes for a happy and sleepy baby. This makes it easier to pose him/her. If bottle feeding please have extra bottles or breastfeeding supplies on hand during the shoot as your baby may need top ups throughout the shoot.
Breastfeeding Moms
Mom's diet can sometimes affect the temperament of baby. Eliminating cruciferous foods i.e. broccoli cauliflower, cabbage, and kale etc., 24-48 hours before the session can be beneficial as these foods can make baby gassy and uncomfortable. It is also recommended to avoid caffeine the day of the photoshoot as it can make babies more alert and more easily startled. Spicy foods is another food to try to avoid 24-48 hours before the photoshoot as this can make baby gassy, fussy, and/or upset their stomach.
What to Bring
If you use a pacifier at home please bring one with you as this can be a great help in soothing newborns. This can make it easier to pose him/her. I also recommend bringing a couple changes of clothing for you just in case accidents happen (spit-up, and/or pee/poo accidents etc.).
WHAT TO EXPECT
Temperature/Environment of studio
I will ensure that the studio area is warm and comfortable for the baby. I have an electric heater to maintain an appropriate temperature around your newborn.
Noise
I will also have a sound machine available to help keep your little one calm with background noise.
Lighting
I use a strobe light with a parabolic umbrella. I use 2 white modifiers over the umbrella to soften the light. There will be a flash when each image is taken.
Safety
I always prioritize the safety of your newborn/s. I may ask for your help to act as a spotter if using props or poses that require the baby to be held or positioned in a certain way.
Patience
Newborns are unpredictable. We may need to take several breaks during the shoot for feeding, changing, and soothing the newborn.
Relax and enjoy
The beginning of the session will be used to get your newborn sleepy and happy. During this time I will have some light snacks and drinks available for you. Tell me in advance if you have any allergies. When baby is nice and sleepy I will start taking the newborn images. I will take care of swaddling, outfit changes, soothing, and keeping your baby safe and happy. I might need your help when doing the prop poses, just to spot you baby while I am taking pictures in order to ensure your baby's safety.
